The Science Behind Drone Spraying

Droplets in the lab

The team at AutoSpray are working hard to provide the UK regulators, HSE and CRD, with the information they need on spraying from a drone in order to consider the use of active chemicals in the near future.

We started by taking the big XAG P40 Spray Drone down to the spray experts at the Silsoe Spray Applications Unit to see what size of droplets the spinning disk applicators were able to produce. Knowing this is a key factor in planning the upcoming drift trials.

It was instantly obvious why we’d been directed to SSAU, their knowledge and experience, backed up with their very high tech laser measurement systems, is unrivalled in the UK. We spent a long day getting our feet wet as we put the drone through a broad spectrum of flow rates and nozzle rotation speeds to get a full picture of the spinning disks performance.

The results were excellent and we’re now looking forward to the next round of trials.

Making the Headlines…

The UK is setting global standards for environmental protection and its farmers have always been world leaders in land stewardship. Now they’re using the latest technology to take the next steps towards a sustainable farming future.

Richard Westcott, the BBC's Science Correspondent spent the day finding out more about how autonomous robots can help UK farmers reduce their carbon and nitrogen footprint by working smarter.

As the government focusses it’s attention on climate change, some of the UK's most advanced Agri Tech companies got together with Tom Pearson, a leading regenerative farmer based in Cambridge.
